The Great Escape is a cozy mountain cabin in the southern Smoky Mountains of Murphy, North Carolina. The gorgeous mountain views are absolutely mesmerizing. The Great Smoky Mountains serve as the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway or trip with the family. The cabin features 3BR + 3.5BA, two living rooms, a wet bar, a well-equipped kitchen, two southern-facing decks, a screened-in porch, and a private spa. The Great Escape sleeps up to eight guests. Small dogs are welcome upon approval.

The space

The Great Escape is located in the Five Forks mountain community of Murphy, North Carolina, a small town nestled in the heart of the southern Smoky Mountains. This quaint mountain town was established in the 1830s and is the westernmost county seat in the state of North Carolina. Murphy is perfectly situated at the confluence of the Hiwassee and Valley rivers, and is an excellent home base for exploring all that the area has to offer. Murphy is roughly a 30-minute drive from the numerous dining, shopping, and outdoor recreation opportunities in Blue Ridge, Georgia. It’s easy to spend a day exploring Blue Ridge’s boutiques, wineries, and shops before heading back to the peace and quiet of our private mountain. Murphy and the Five Forks community showcase small town mountain life at its very best.

In 2021, the owners of The Great Escape set out to find their “home away from home,” and found it in Five Forks. Having grown up in Jacksonville, Florida, they were well acquainted with the charms of coastal beach life, but the Smokies’ mystic, ethereal beauty had always captivated them. The owners fell in love with the home’s incredible views and quiet solitude. The Great Escape has proven to be their family’s perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the daily urban grind.

North Carolina Cabin Rental

In September of 2022, we (Barrett and Roger) had the pleasure of vacationing at another home on the mountain, Misty Mountain. We came to the area to celebrate a good friend’s wedding in Brasstown, North Carolina, located just down the road from Murphy. For Roger, this trip was a special homecoming, as he spent his summers as a young man working in this area. We absolutely fell in love with the town of Murphy, the locals, and this stunning mountain cabin! We made a leap of faith and reached out to the owners to inquire about caring for their lovely home. Luckily for everyone, they said, “Yes!”. Our Smoky Mountain expansion has proven to be a good move, as we partnered with the owners of The Great Escape in January 2023, and have other projects in the works.

This three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home offers an open-concept living and dining space, a fully-equipped kitchen, an additional downstairs living room for the kiddos, a private spa, two custom-built fire pits, and tons of privacy. The mountain views, attention to detail, and glorious neighborhood trails really make this mountain cabin stand out.

The Great Escape can accommodate up to eight guests comfortably, utilizing one king bed and three queen beds. We do not offer sleeper sofas. The interior living space is 2,287 square feet.

Murphy NC Cabins

Guests do need to climb two stairs to access the main floor of the home. No interior stairs are required to access the main floor’s living room, dining table, kitchen, queen bedroom with ensuite, or half bath with laundry room. Also on the main level are the glorious deck, private spa, screened-in porch with gas fire pit, grill, and outdoor shower. There are two sets of interior stairs, one that lead to the lofted master bedroom, and another that leads to the downstairs living room, wet bar, guest bedroom, third guest bath, and the lower level southern-facing porch.

There is a keyless entry on the eastern-facing front door. Guests will be given the access code to the keypad prior to their arrival. Guests will also receive the code to the neighborhood’s gated entrance, which is located at the bottom of the mountain.

Upon entering The Great Escape, guests are greeted by a bright living, dining, and kitchen area. This layout is perfect for enjoying time with friends and family. The living area features cozy arm chairs and a suede sofa, amazing mountain views, a gas log fireplace, and a flat-screen smart television with complimentary access to YouTube TV.

The kitchen is fully-stocked with more than the basics; pots and pans, a drip coffee pot, a K-cup coffee maker, an electric tea kettle, crockpot, blender, and ample utensils. If we have not stocked an item that is needed, please let us know. Please note that the home will occasionally have coffee, sugar, creamers, salt, pepper, other spices, and olive oil. However, we do not stock these items. If desired, we can arrange for grocery shopping and delivery prior to arrival. The kitchen dining table has seating for six, while the bar seats two. There is an additional dining table in the downstairs living room, which seats four.

Murphy North Carolina Cabin Rentals

The home has two master bedrooms. The queen master bedroom with private ensuite is located on the north-east side of the main floor. It features a comfortable queen bed, a larger dresser, two night stands with reading lamps, a mounted flat-screen smart television, and a large walk-in closet for storing luggage. Its four-piece bath has a shower/tub combo, a vanity with two sinks and ample counter space, a loo, fresh linens, and travel toiletries.

The king master bedroom with private ensuite is located at the top of the living room staircase. It features gorgeous mountain views, a comfortable king bed, a larger dresser, two night stands with reading lamps, a sitting chair, a mounted flat-screen smart television, and a large walk-in closet for storing luggage. Its three-piece bath has a shower/tub combo, a vanity with ample counter space, a loo, fresh linens, and travel toiletries.

There is a half bath located off the hallway of the main floor as well. There is a full-size washer and dryer for guests to use in this half bath. While we do offer a starter kit of laundry detergent, guests should always supply their own detergent for extended stays.

Down the interior staircase, guests will find another fully-functional living room with a wet bar and incredible Smoky Mountain views. This living room has a mounted flat-screen smart television with complimentary access to YouTube TV, comfortable leather sofa, an oversized chair, a gas fireplace, ample floor space for spreading out, a dining area, and access to the lower level southern-facing porch. This is a great place to send the teens for a movie night or for family game night.

There is one guest bedroom on this downstairs floor. It has two queen beds, a shared nightstand with a reading lamp, a large dresser, and a closet for luggage storage. There is also a third full bath on this level. This three-piece bath has a shower/tub combo, a vanity with ample counter space, a loo, fresh linens, and travel toiletries.

The upstairs living room has access to our spa deck, which also has incredible mountain views. Please always use the outdoor shower, which does offer hot and cold water, prior to entering the spa. The spa is serviced between guests. However, for extended stays we do leave a packet of shock for you to toss in the water mid-stay. Please pour in the packet and turn on the jets. Wait thirty minutes before entering.

The Great Escape has a Char-Broil propane grill. Guests are responsible for bringing all of their BBQ supplies, excluding propane. The grill will be connected to a tank. There is also a back-up tank of propane on the deck, and an additional one stored out of sight, should there be issues with the primary tank during your stay.

The screened-in porch has ample seating and a gas fire pit. Please see the house manual for instructions, and always cover the the glass rocks and turn off the propane tank when not in use. The wood-burning fire pit is on the east side of the property. The firewood will be cut and ready for your enjoyment on arrival. If you feel you are running low on wood, please text us.

A 4WD or AWD vehicle is recommended for all seasons, and required to access the home in the wintertime. Please review our House Manual for more details on access. Remember to use common sense when traveling on our curvy mountain roads.

Though you may find it hard to pull yourself away from the comfort of our gorgeous mountain cabin, downtown Murphy is definitely a great place to explore. Guests will enjoy walking down the flower-lined streets, viewing our restored historic buildings, dining at one of many delicious local restaurants, sipping on a cold one at Buck Bald Brewing, and shopping at our unique boutiques. Guest access

Guests have access to the entire home except for two locked supply closets on the downstairs floor.

Exterior Security Cameras:
The Great Escape is a well-secured home. The exterior security cameras are on the property to support guest safety and peace of mind. The cameras record video and sound and are motion-activated. They do not look into any interior spaces. Please read below for a thorough outline of our security features.

Please note that we do not have any interior noise sensors, nor do we have interior cameras.

The Great Escape has two exterior cameras:
– Camera 1 is mounted on the east side of the home and faces the driveway.
– Camera 2 is mounted on the east side and faces the porch stoop.

Quiet Hours & Exterior Lighting:
– Our neighborhood is a full-time residential mountain community. Quiet hours are from 10 PM until 8 AM. Sounds travel on the mountain top. We ask that all music is taken inside (or turned way down) after 10 PM.
– Please use any dimmers for the exterior lights and do not leave the lights on overnight. Turning the exterior lights to the “off” mode by 10 PM is preferred.
– If you violate quiet hours and we receive complaints from our neighbors, we will terminate your stay early without a refund.
– Please do NOT leave any floodlights on overnight as it shines in our neighbor’s windows. If you want to leave on an exterior light, leave the front porch light on instead.

Accepting Packages:
– The Great Escape does not have a mailbox, so we cannot accept packages from USPS. If you need to have an item shipped, please ensure that it is shipped via UPS or FedEx.
– Please contact us to arrange special delivery for items that can only be delivered via USPS.

Other things to note

Rental & Damages Agreement Required:
– All reservations require an electronically signed and completely filled out Rental & Damages Agreement.

– The terms of the Rental & Damages Agreement can be reviewed prior to booking in the “Things to Know” section of the public listing, under “House Rules.”
