Property Description
Still Rock Farms invites you to share in the out-of-the-ordinary experience of farm life in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway for two or a memorable vacation for the whole family, this brand new cabin will broaden your horizons with a unique adventure on a working farm – complete with free eggs you can gather by walking to the chicken coop!
Imagine waking up in the morning, putting on a sweater, and taking your steaming mug of coffee out to the screened deck to overlook the fields of grazing cattle. One-hundred-plus fenced acres of private land surround the cabin, which is sided with wood that was milled from the very trees that were cleared to build the home. Stretch your legs and explore Still Rock Farms’ beautiful rolling pasture and forest. Several miles of rough roads run through the property that are ideal for hiking and mountain biking.
The cabin’s interior is bright and cozy with a comfortable living area, and the fully equipped kitchen allows you the ease of cooking homestyle meals. Satellite TV and WiFi will keep you connected, but you’ll find that nature keeps drawing you back outside to appreciate the peace and quiet of the countryside. Take a well-deserved break in a rocking chair and enjoy the slower pace of life. With no light pollution out here, the nighttime sky is full of stars – perfect for an evening soak in the hot tub. Still Rock Farm’s newly installed hot tub is “Chemical Free” and filled with mountain spring water before each guest arrival!
The guest cabin may be newly constructed, but much else at Still Rock Farms stands as it has for over a century, including a family cemetery with gravestones dating back to the 1800s, farm relics like a mule-driven plow that until recently worked the hillside for corn, and preserved structures that showcase the property’s history such as the salthouse, canning house, and original farmhouse. As you drive to the property you’ll pass one of the two Allen E. Roberts Barns built in the early 1800s and converted to burley tobacco barns in the mid 1950s. These are built of finely hewn logs with half-dovetail corner notches, the largest log being 19 inches high. They are part of the South Marshall Township Historic Barn Tour, which is a project of the Appalachian Barn Alliance, and you’re welcome to walk to the smaller of the two and tour it any time, as it is part of the property. Still Rock Farms owes its namesake to the old days when corn liquor was made in abundance in this region – a hillside cave shows evidence of bygone times with a black soot outline on the rock where the moonshine still once burned.
Today, Still Rock Farms is home to over fifty head of cattle, 2 turkeys, and one miniature donkey named Eeyore and another Donkey named Winne. There’s also pigs on the farm at times. As a guest on the farm, you’ll witness the daily activities of tending to the cows and caring for the property, and the owners are always happy to answer questions! Agritourism is an exciting educational opportunity, especially for children, to see a working farm and witness a way of life that emphasizes down-to-earth values like respect for the land and hard work. Be it an encounter with a grazing cow, a hike through the woods, or a raspberry picked and eaten right off the bush, Still Rock Farms offers a true break from the rush!
